Noises (Strange)

noisey primary

I own a 06 dyna low rider with 6078 miles, and I recently noticed a whining, or rattle on the primary side. No warranty left, so I went to the internet and found threads concerning the input primary bearing and race. Also have heard of stator problems. I understand that Harley is willing to pay for replacement parts and labor should I call them, dealer says they have to tear it down. My bike has a definite whine when in neutral or downshifting. Noise goes away when I put it in gear. or engage the clutch. Dealer is acting stupid, like they know nothing. Anyone out that that can help?

Gas Tank Noise

This problem seems minor compared to others on your site, but it is driving me nuts. This season, my '08 Dyna Superglide has developed a nasty clunk that seems to come from the gas tank, whenever I go over a bump, manhole cover, or pot-hole. This is its second riding season, and I have about 5200 miles on it. At first, I thought it might actually be inside the tank, like the fuel pump, but I can't rule out the instrument console either. I have had that off a couple of times, but have not found anything loose.

Re: 09 piece of crap

I still haven't found the gear noise in my 2006 Electraglide. I just received my Nov issue of RIDER magazine. In the Tech Q & A there are two complaints about HD's, one is a 2009 Ultra Classic. No support from the dealer or the Mfg. I'm beginning to have serious doubts about owning another one. For those that have had good luck with their HD's, I say good for you.

Question on brake noise

I own a 1998 Harley FXDS-Conv. Recently I have had a brake problem. The bike has approx. 38K, I put 20K on the bike myself, it was under extended warranty for 2 years, when I bought it used in 05 from a Harley Dealer. A little background, obviously I am not mechanically inclined and have almost all my work done by Harley or a Harley certified mechanic with several years experience that has his own shop after working at a couple of dealerships.

Recently, I had a rear brake rotor to warp. I replaced the rotor and pads, the brakes work fine, except for one symptom I encountered previously. Riding by myself, no problems. Riding two up, I cannot apply rear brakes fully, I hear a grinding nose (when rear brakes are applied only). Riding by myself I can lock the tire, no grinding. I had this symptom once before.

Approx. weight with rider + passenger 390 lbs., a little of a load on a Dyna, but it did it for over 2 years without this problem.

This spring I had a rear tire replaced, and had the brake pads replaced, I do this approx. every other tire change while I have the tire off. There was a problem with the brake pedal, two much play (pedal).

I went back and had the pedal height adjusted. The problem started after this. I had it checked out again before the rotor warped, they found nothing. Looked for suspension problems 2 up, or source of the grinding noise.

I suspect this was related to warping the rotor. Could adjustment on the pedal height cause this?

Re: My Harley issues

The status of my 2006 electraglide and my wife's 2003 Dyna lowrider are unchanged. Both bikes still make a metal grinding noise like a coffee grinder. Three HD Master Mechanics tell me this noise is normal. I refuse to believe it. I do believe that original workmanship and quality control from the factory may be a factor. My hunch is they made a lousy transmission - unfortunately I refuse to pay the 2K to replace it. I also emailed the gentleman from Moreno Valley Choppers who asked me to think outside the box. It's possible something is loose on the bike.

HARLEY EXPERIENCE 2006 Electraglide Standard

I own a 2006 Electraglide Standard with 22K on the odometer. I've had a persistant engine noise from the right side like a coffee grinder grinding coffee. Both dealers in my area have not expressed enough interest in trying to find the problem. Coincidentally my wife's 2003 Dyna (15K miles) makes the same noise. I think it's timing chain or tensioners, or bearings or bearings in the trans. The noise drives me nuts. I found an independent mechanic willing to take a closer look. Dealer skill level has been disappointing and over expensive.
