My List of H-D Models....

So when you enter a blog post you are compelled to specify the model and year of your H-D. I have never been very knowledgeable about all the different models and years, so I am wondering: is it possible to specify with *reasonable* precision what kind of H-D we are talking about using just the year and a simplified list of model names as I am using right now?

I am trying to avoid a really LONG list of model names, and / or getting into the alphabet soup of short model numbers that H-D uses for each model, while maintaining clarity.
