I own a 2005 Harley Davidson Heritage Soft Tail Classic with about 24,000 miles on it. I have a problem with the rear laced wheel spokes coming loose for no apparent reason.
The Bike has always been serviced at HD dealerships at the proper intervals, 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 15,000, 20,000
The rear tire was replaced at 9,634 miles
The rear tire was replaced again at 20,486 miles
At less then 24,000 miles the bike started to wobble at speeds between 65 mph and 75 mph. I brought the bike in prematurely for its 25,000 mile service interval to the same dealership that replaced the rear tire at 20,486 miles. They identified the problem as the real wheel spokes becoming loose and that because there is now wear on the spoke connection to the hub that it will not be possible to keep the spokes tight and that the problem
will happen again if the wheel is not replaced. The bike was rode only 3,500 miles with no rode hazard incidents that might have loosened the wheel spokes.
I asked the deal service representative and Harley Davidson customer service to escalate the matter as a possible defective rear wheel or lack of proper service to the wheel when the 20k service was performed and the rear wheel
was replaced. Neither Harley Davidson nor the dealership takes any responsibility for the problem.
So, what this experience tells me is this: Harley Davidson laced wheel spokes can come loose for no apparent reason after they are properly inspected and tightened and rode within several thousand miles after the inspection and tightening. I disagree with Harley Davidson and the
Dealership and conclude that most likely the dealership did not properly inspect and tighten the spokes when the rear wheel was replaced at 20,486 miles.
