Handle bars on a 2008

I purchased a 2008 Road King last March and was once struck by the discomfort of the handlebars (too short, too far forward). This is my 4th Harley and the first time I have experienced any riding dismay. When I purchased the bike (this is my 4th Harley, so I am not unfamiliar with their product) I indicated to the salesman that the bars were not as comfortable as on the Ultra (my previous bike) he said "no problem, you can change them later if you care to". After riding a few weeks I decided to change them only to find out that Harley has not yet designed any optional bars for the 2008. I called Harley in Milwaukee and all they said was "sorry, we may have something out later in the summer".
I called the dealership here in Mesa (Chester's, where I purchased the bike) just today to see what is now available and they are telling me that aftermarket products are available but the change out would cost around $1,400. (My son's 2005 Harley Road King cost $500 to change the bars). I asked what was the huge difference and all he could come up with was "sorry, that's what is costs now". I told him if I knew that it would be that expensive I would have either purchased a different Harley or maybe even a different brand.
Anyone who is thinking of buying a new Harley (2008) really ought to think about the long term expense of what they are getting into because Harley, like everything else, is becoming more of an expense rather an enjoyment.

road king handle bars
hi! i bought a 2008 road king last year. i am a female, so my arms are a bit shorter than a man's. i too struggled with the handle bars big time!
while in sturgis last yr, i ran across a company that installs handle bars: adjustable handle bars. they are called heli bars. they are adjustable up & down & in/out. i love them!!!
Hi there, A friend of mine
Hi there,
A friend of mine changed his bar out for a heritage bar, and he absolutely loves it. Just a suggestion.
2008 Handlebars..
My local dealer replaced the stock ones with the Softail handlebars and it worked out perfectly (no change in the brake lines or wiring)..
