Electrical Failure

RE: harley rotor stator regulator

it has been quite a challenge trying to remain positive about a bike that breaks down and needs more attention than a needy girlfriend. any way. i had pulled the primary cover to replace the stator and see what happened and one of the magnets on the rotor was missing a chunk....likely came loose and got chewed up in the casing and shorted the stator windings, frying my voltage regulator as well....so i call harley dealy and get price for the 3 parts. over 800 bucks and they are of different amps, the rotor was 45 the stator 32 and the regulator 38, but the dealer says its the right one for the bike (i expected a future issue because i explained to him pumping a max 45 amps will over heat a 32 amp stator (it is just a coil of wire) and likely pop my 40 amp breaker. so i declined the harley dealer parts cause it sounded like he didn't understand my concern, and i ordered and bought a matched 38 amp set of rotor stator and regulator from jp cycles for 350 dollars for all 3 pieces. how sweet. my bike was parked wile i waited on parts again. and i was a full week into my vacation before i got them. i put it together on a sunday night in yellowknife canada, drove to sturgis on that bike, about 4000 miles with out an electrical problem. i replaced the battery before i left for the hell of it. in sturgis i had to find a welding shop... the tail pipe /muffler ripped the metal bracket from the mount under the hard bags so it needed welding. we drove back trouble free ...i've attached a pic going into yellowsone park before we hit sturgis...

Re: Harley

My stator burned out at 72,000 + miles.....that was the first repair I had to make on my 99 Dyna......

My new bike - I built myself - not really all that ifficult....

last fall i bought a 99 flhtcui ultra clssic from a dealer with less than 30 ooo km on it. didnt get to use it till the next sping, it ran ok (if black smoke out the tail pipe is common for a $14000 fuel injected used bike sold as excellent condition bike) so any way, when i fueled it up, where the fuel hoses attached to the tank (there are 2 pressure connectors on the tank on the injector module) they were both dripping gas on to the engine... so i had to replace both at my cost 200 bucks. just for the parts, sorry only the engine and transmission were covered under warranty i was told.... so i bought the parts and did it my self, thank god for the after markets that make better parts than the original equipment. if i had to pay the dealer to do it it would have probably been double. ok the bike starting cutting out.... with a passenger its dangerous.... turns out the crank sensor in the engine started failing intermittently.... stranded twice.... after i put less than 1000 kms on it.... the embarrassment was nasty too, i called the dealer they sure we will cover it... had it fixed... then sorry that's electrical not the engine. even though its in the equine, but your warranty is still good... so it cost me over 400 dollars... now the stator fried... i mean fried... no voltage out of it... stinks..... now i am trying to replace that at my cost of course... did i mention the mount for the tour pack was fractured, likely from the vibration on the flimsy metal bracket that holds it in place.... all under me riding it 5000kms....is it my last harley?? probably.

My 1994 FXDWG

Hey Clayton, Came across your site and have enjoyed the responses. I currently ride a 1994 Harley FXDWG that I bought almost 5 years ago with 13,000 miles which now has about 37,000 on it and is completely stock (As I write this, it is November 2007). I've ridden her from LA to San Francisco and back (Actually about 100 miles north of SF for a total of 500 miles one way in a day). Three times from LA to St. George, Utah in one day (400 miles one way and usually in the middle of summer at 100+ degrees) Once to Yosemite from LA - and many, many shorter rides with no problems.

Here is a true story for you!

I have figured out today and had a lot of fun laughing and acting up about it today! The best way to enjoy a Harley is to shine it up, and park it in the garage. Go get you a lawn chair and a brewster and sit and admire your bike......just do not try to ride it!! Kit

HARLEY DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLES
A COMMON SENSE LOOK
IT IS A SHAME-REALLY IS

I have rode motorcycles all my life, I am now 53 years old and in the market for a new machine. I have had every make of motorcycle made I suppose, including three Harleys.

H-D Electrical Failure

Bike cuts out, complete electric failure, approximately 30-45 seconds after leaving an extended red light, or pulling hills during hot weather conditions in Phoenix and nearby hills. Will sit for 2-4 minutes, and breaker will reset on it's own, bike starts and runs great until the next extended light or heavy hill. Charging system is putting out 13.6 volts. The 40 Amp breaker was replaced by a 50 Amp on a recall. No faults noted on engine scanner

Should I try a 60 amp breaker?

Is the Stator in the charging system bad?

06 Street Glide piece of SHIT!!!!

I recently sold a Vulcan 2000 that my wife and I rode around the state of Nebraska - Pike's Peak, etc for a total of 4500 miles without any problems. I had 3 other Vulcans before that for a total of 90,000 miles and again NO PROBLEMS!!! I have recently purchased a new 2005 Deluxe with paint peeling off the front fender and a 2006 Street Glide that has been in the shop for radio problems and now a wiring harness that they cannot seem to find time for me or my problems - SAME OLD HARLEY. AMF years might have been better.

Well, were do I begin!

I initially purchased a new 1998 Road King Classic with the infamous "Evolution" engine. Harley in the mid 1990s decided to offer fuel injected versions, I suspect due to EPA requirements. After less than five hundred miles of service the bike would not start and I had to bum start it to take it to the dealer. They thought that I had a malfunctioning battery and they replaced it with a new one. Once I returned home I noticed that there were brown stains all over my shiny white walled tire on the rear. I took it back and was told that it was battery acid and that they would replace the tire, rear rotor and any other parts that were acid stained. They thought that they had fixed the problem but wanted to wait to make certain prior to replacing the tire and other acid stained items. They finally had to call the factory for help and found that one of the wires was reversed right from the factory. That was the beginning of a nightmare for me. I ended up having five (5) upper ends, three stators, two motor mounts, one rear master brake cylinder failure, and at 39,990 miles Harley-Davidson decided to replace the bike with a 2000 year model Road King to avoid a law suite that I had intended to file against them.

June 2001: The Plot Thickens: My American-Made Piece of Junk

As it turns out, Bartel's rocket-scientist mechanics were able to get that cover off without pulling the engine, so the oil leak in the rear cyclinder "only" set me back $123.

And then guess what happens not two weeks later? I leave work in the early evening, get all suited up, and hit the "start" button, and absolutely nothing happens. Deader then a door-nail. Followed by a $37 taxi ride home, as Orange County is too good for public transit.
